  • Facebook have started to roll out its Spam Filter using its staggered implementation policy.

Yesterday Facebook posted an update to all affected pages stating:

Facebook is now helping Page admins ensure that the most valuable content posted by users on their Page wall is more visible to anyone viewing the Page.”

“We are now offering automatic content filtering on Page walls that will ensure that posts soliciting spam are removed from public view as well as ensure that posts containing good content remain more visible.”

The filter will become available for all admin run pages that provide visitors with the opportunity to post on  their wall.

The spam filter, which has been in production since September, will create a separate tab for spam posts, meaning that the administrators of a page will have the existing options of viewing page managers, fans and a new separate tab for Spam. This option has be placed under the “write something” box along at the end of the pre-existing options.

The filter automatically removes posts on the wall that the filter believes to be Spam, this will include links to websites, adding likes, installing links and adding friends that the filter feels could be Spam.

Then once the admin have clicked on the spam tab they will be able to view a list similar to the one for regular wall posts. The admin will then be able to read through this list choosing to delete posts from the page or allowing the post back into their users feed.

Spam has become an increasing problem for Facebook over recent months. The overriding issue with Spam on Facebook lies in the fact that for successful engagement between fans and the admin of the page, the page must allow for a certain amount of open discussion.

However, this has been increasingly capitalised on by spammers using freedom on communication to publicise their own ventures. This can result in users becoming less engaged in the page as the pages message becomes diluted.

If Facebook successfully integrate the spam filter, they will have succeeded in making their Social Network a more secure advertising platform for brands.

This should result in Facebook becoming a more lucrative option for brand advertising, a major positive for Sports New Media.
