Yesterday Sports New Media mentioned that MySpace and Facebook had a joint announcement to make. Today we can confirm that at 8:00pm GMT yesterday, the two companies verified rumours that have been circulating for almost a year.
MySpace users can now log in to the once dominant social network using Facebook.”
This new relationship means MySpace users will be presented with a connect with Facebook button on the MySpace homepage, allowing for various personalisation features including users interest to be imported to their Facebook profile.
Facebook users will also be provided with the opportunity to import their likes and interests over to MySpace. This will generate a “real-time stream” that will automatically update from their favourite musicians and actors.

Furthermore, MySpace has future plans to introduce “Like” buttons to their pages, meaning MySpace content like music and videos will start getting shared back to Facebook.
This new found alliance has set Facebook and MySpace in direct competition with Apple’s new social network Ping, that has fallen under criticism recently about its meagre returns to date.
MySpace relaunched last month as a “Socail entertainment” sight instead of a social network. This Latest move canonises their desire to no longer compete with Facebook but instead work with the phenomenon, tapping in to their exceptional user base.
MySpace are hoping to use Facebook’s increasing role as a traffic source for news and entertainment. If MySpace is able to implement this Mashup effectively, they should experience a boost in numbers from Facebook’s 620 million users around the world, but they must ensure they get their new strategy correct.
MySpace used to be the world’s number 1 social network, when Facebook was only an idea in Mark Zuckerberg’s dorm room. However, The Guardian report that earlier this month MySpace was officially labelled “a problem” by its owners, with losses described as “neither acceptable or sustainable.”
At the moment over 33 million people in the UK are signed up to Facebook, while MySpace has less than 3 million users in the UK. Although it should also be noted that MySpace is still the fourth-largest social network in the world with nearly 91 million users worldwide.
