To commemorate this, the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games today launched a Social Olympic event – Competitive Tweeting – inviting the online community to compete as athletes to discover which country has the largest fan base.
The interactive contest ranks the top 20 countries based on the number of tweets, images and videos submitted. To compete, tweets must include the hash tag, #1YearToGo, with the three-letter code for your country.
Which nation will be winning gold for the Tweeting event? Brazil is currently in pole position, followed by Great Britain and the US.
In the build up to the 2012 Olympic Games, the official website for London 2012 has used social media to encourage fans to be actively involved. Earlier this year, fans had the opportunity to create their own Olympic mascot online and to share this on Facebook and Twitter.
